Description
The saguaro is the iconic cactus of the Sonoran Desert. It can grow to around 70 feet tall, the height of a seven story building. Arms form when the saguaro is from 50 to 75 years-of-age. Judging by the number of arms and their length, this is a mighty old saguaro. The saguaro has a life-span of 250 to 300 years-of-age.
I photographed this image in the spring of 2016, right before the spring rains that cause the desert to bloom. The vertical frame emphasizes the overall height of this desert plant. The brush in the foregroudn acts to protect the saguaro although this is generally a characteristic of very young saguaros in their juvenile years when they are vulnerable to all kinds of threats.
