Description
The East and West Mittens are the first two iconic examples of the mesa buttes one sees as one drives into Monument Valley a Navaho Tribal Park located along the border of northeast Arizona and southeast Utah. The park is the equivalent of a US National Park located on the land of the Navaho Nation near Kayenta, Arizona. A first-time visitor to the park may have a moment of deja-vu as the monumental buttes are familiar to Western movie fans as well as in Roadrunner cartoons. Yet to see these magnificent buttes up close, to see them in their vast, unspoiled arena; to experience the grandeur of vast distances and open landscape is breathtaking. The Mittens are rendered here in black and white with a strong red filter darkening the sky while retaining the detail in the formations themselves.

I processed the raw image file using filters from ON1 Perfect Effects 9 as well as some minor tweaking in Photoshop including sCurve adjustments, brightness, saturation and the camera raw filter to produce this black and white image.
