Description
I photographed Yosemite Falls framed by Ponderosa Pines in mid-morning. The Yosemite Valley, while beautiful, was disappointing. Likely because all of my prior knowledge of Yosemite came from Ansel Adams photographs, I thought I knew the place. In fact, everything i saw in the valley was not able to hold my visual attention, perhaps because of the familiarity or perhaps because I arrived in the valley after having driven the Tioga Pass which made everything I saw in Yosemite Valley pale in comparison. The freshness of Tioga Pass set against the mundane familiarity of Yosemite Valley didn’t give the Valley or the Merced River a fighting chance. That being said, this image of Yosemite Falls is a particular favorite perhaps because driving through Tioga Pass one encounters Yosemite Creek Falls otherwise called Quaking Aspen Falls, a magnificent cascading waterfall before it becomes the famous upper falls rushing under the road and on to the valley.
Next time I am in the Eastern Sierras I will skip Yosemite Valley in favor of Tioga Pass exploration.
