Two mature sequoias in Grants Grove found along the loop trail in early November. This grove is a special place containing a wide variety of trees and other forest vegetation along with mature sequoias and a number of giant monarchs, the largest of which is the General Grant Sequoia, the highlight of the trail. At the base the General Grant measures forty feet across. It is hard to imagine a tree of such enormous volume. The General Grant is 2,200 years old and still growing strong.
Directly ahead and between the two mature trees are some spire-top sequoias with another poking its crown above the canopy to the left. The spire-top is the stage before maturity with the trees racing toward the sky. These trees are somewhere between 250 to 500 years of age. At around 500 years old, the lower branches fall off creating the bare trunks found in the mature trees.
Giant sequoias can live for over 3,000 years, outlasting all of their mixed conifer forest neighbors. What is it...
