Driving into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison for the first time was quite astonishing. This is the first glimpse of the canyon one sees; it is simply stunning. While there was no pull-off, I moved the car to the edge of the road, got out and looked out for a long time before I returned to the car for my camera. I am grateful for the trunk of the dead Utah Juniper across path making the image more powerful than memory itself.
