The Painted Desert badlands visible from Kachina Point are exposed examples of the Chinle Formation which was deposited over 200 million years ago during the Late Triassic Period. The colorful badland hills, flat-topped mesas, and sculptured buttes of the Painted Desert are primarily made up of the Chinle Formation, mainly fluvial (river related) deposits. I photographed the Painted Desert from the rim of Kachina Point in a late October afternoon. The image includes some of the vegetation found along the rim. In the immediate foreground is a small prickly pear cactus. Immediately to the left is a fine example of an agave; a desert succulent. I used a 38mm setting on my 19-105 mm lens producing a wide angle effect in a vertical image. ____________________ A limited edition of 25 prints signed and numbered by the photographer are available directly from our studio.
