Artist's Description

I photographed Storm Clouds over the Sonoran Desert in Spring in early April as the parched desert was getting ready to absorb two-days of rain. I am standing in the Supersttiion Wilderness along a branch of Jacobs Crosscut trail looking north toward Four Peaks in the distance.

The Sonoran desert is often referred to as a tropical desert. With rainfall averaging from 3 to 16 inches per year across two distinct rainy seasons, the summer monsoons and the sustained winter rains, the Sonoran desert is lush with both plant and animal life. Spring storms do occur but they are far rarer than the seasonal rains. In this image one can see a virga. the meteorological name for visible precipitation that evaporates before hitting the ground. The next day brought two-days of intermittent rain in April; the third day when the sun returned to light the desert, the spring flowers were ablaze with oranges, yellows and violets.

The first hint of cold, generally sometime in late October I flee the dreadful weather and head to Arizona.
