Description
The sequoia grove in this image illustrates a grove where both mature and adolescent sequoias share some of the same space. As the large tree toward the center grows in volume it is likely to take over the entire space leaving only itself to control the space around it. The younger trees all seem to have a lichen adapted to grow on the bark of the young sequoia. When I first encountered it I was certain it was a moss or moss-like structure until a ranger set me straight. The larger, mature tree has none of this lichen growing on it. I forgot to ask the why question so I do not, nor it is likely that I might never know the correct answer. It is, however, safe to say that the lichen adds a mystery to this wonderful place.
Giant sequoias can live for over 3,000 years, outlasting all of their mixed conifer forest neighbors. What is it about giant sequoias that allows them to persist through millennia? Surprisingly, a major factor in in the longevity of giant sequoias is a chemical called tannin. The tannin, present in high concentrations in sequoia bark, gives the sequoia resistance to rot, boring insects, and fire.
The mid-sierra zone (5,000-8,000 ft) creates ideal conditions for giant sequoia growth. Mild winter and summer temperatures, deep winter snowpack, and a rich fire history have made it possible for the world's largest tree to get its biggest in these parks.
