These Milkweed Seed Pods were shot in the Burnidge Forest Preserve in Elgin, Illinois. The preserve contains both wooded areas and restored tall grass prairie. The milkweed plants are abundant in the prairie areas of the preserve.
Milkweed is preferred by female Monarch butterflies for laying eggs. The Monarch caterpillar feeds on the plant and attaches to the underside of the leaves to form its chrysalis in which the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly. These ripening seed pods assure the Monarch that there will be places for them to feed...
