Description
The plant life on the Sonoran Desert is rich and diverse. The ocotillo is not only a hearty plant, it is also useful. Indigenous people used the wood of the ocotillo to make many things. Not a true cactus but not a tree, it is somewhere in between. This one standing in the shadow of Superstition Mountain is a prime example of the species. Shot in Tonto National Forest near Apache Junction, Arizona. The trail that can be seen in the lower left is the Treasure Loop Trail going up to Green Boulder where it splits to both the east and west.

I processed the raw image file shot with a Canon 60D with an 18-55 Canon lens using Photomatix Pro 5, filters from Topaz Labs including Detail 3 and DeJPEG 4 as well as some minor tweaking in Photoshop including sCurve adjustments, brightness, saturation and the camera raw filter to produce this HDR black and white image.
