Description
Mackinac Island is an island and resort area, covering 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) in land area, in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between the state's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The island was home to an Odawa settlement before European exploration began in the 17th century. It served a strategic position as a center on the commerce of the Great Lakes fur trade. This led to the establishment of Fort Mackinac on the island by the British during the American Revolutionary War. It was the site of two battles during the War of 1812. The island today has a year round population of slightly under 500 people but in the summer tourist season the population swells to accommodate an average of 15,000 tourists visiting the island every day. No cars are allowed on the island proper so transportation consists of horse and buggy, horseback riding and bicycles. One gets the sense of an American town in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Just under 75 percent of the Islands land is designated as Mackinac Island State Park.
I photographed the church using an 18mm focal length lens from the main street in town as the town itself is to the left with the beginning of open land to the right. The decision to convert the RAW exposure to black and white was made before I released the shutter.
