Description
In downtown Chicago, Illinois it is difficult not to look up. Tourists for sure are caught looking up at the architectural wonders of the city. It was, after all, right here that the Chicago School of Architecture was born and architects from all around the world came here to call this place home. I too, even as a native born Chicagoian, find it hard to resist looking up when surrounded by buildings that touch the sky.
I photographed the two Water Towers, the original that survived the Great Chicago Fire and the modern shopping mall, hotel and condos that tower above its namesake and the John Hancock building, the black monolith with the external support Xs, their neighbor, on a bright early summer afternoon while visiting the city with the intent to shed my nativism and act, as best I could, as a tourist collecting memories of their visit to one of Americas great cities.

I processed the raw image file shot with a Canon 60D with an 18-55 Canon lens using Photomatix Pro 5, filters from Topaz Labs including Detail 3 and DeJPEG 4 as well as some minor tweaking in Photoshop including sCurve adjustments, brightness, saturation and the camera raw filter to produce this HDR black and white image.
