Artist's Description

Legend has it that one Capt. Stewart had a severely damaged leg. Local aboriginals found him without hope. They treated his wound with dried jimson weed and bear fat and three days later his wound was completely healed. All this happened four centuries ago but the petroglyphs on the rock are older than that. If only one could read them as they were intended to be understood but, alas, their meaning is lost to us forever. They are signifiers of some long-ago forgotten tale of a people no longer with us. While Hospital Rock is too low in elevation for Sequoias, the area is filled with white pines and other vegetation crucial to a healthy forest.

Giant sequoias can live for over 3,000 years, outlasting all of their mixed conifer forest neighbors. What is it about giant sequoias that allows them to persist through millennia?
