Description
Niagara Falls, Ontario, is a Canadian city at the famous waterfalls of the same name, linked with the U.S. by the Rainbow Bridge. Its site on the Niagara River's western shore overlooks the Horseshoe Falls, the cascades' most expansive section.
The verdant green color of the water flowing over the Niagara Falls is a byproduct of the estimated 60 tonnes/minute of dissolved salts and "rock flour" (very finely ground rock) generated by the erosive force of the Niagara River itself. The current rate of erosion is approximately 1 foot (0.30m) per year, down from a historical average of 3 feet (0.91m) per year.
I photographed this image of Horseshoe Falls from the deck allowing a look behind the falls; the leading edge of the falls in the foreground encapsulate the mist formed behind the falls while the falls behind this leading edge seem to disappear into the mist formed by the falls themselves. This image was photographed using an 18-105mm lens with a neutral density filter set to quite dark allowing for a 0.3 sec. exposure. The image combines the falls with its ever-present mist caused by the turbulence of the water as it is absorbed by the water below.
