Description
Visiting Kings Canyon when the trees touch the clouds is a unique experience. On the afternoon of November 1st, the clouds enveloped the sequoia grove as if in a secret embrace. Photographing under these conditions is energizing. The low light required me to push the ISO to 4000. The high ISO left its digital signature as image noise but noise within acceptable limits I think. This particular spot in the grove shows three sequoias surrounded by a white fir forest. The sequoias dwarf their counterparts in both girth and height. I selected black and white with a touch of sepia toning to emphasize the errieness of the forest on this foggy afternoon.
Giant sequoias can live for over 3,000 years, outlasting all of their mixed conifer forest neighbors. What is it about giant sequoias that allows them to persist through millennia? Surprisingly, a major factor in in the longevity of giant sequoias is a chemical called tannin. The tannin, present in high concentrations in sequoia bark, gives the sequoia resistance to rot, boring insects, and fire.
The mid-sierra zone (5,000-8,000 ft) creates ideal conditions for giant sequoia growth. Mild winter and summer temperatures, deep winter snowpack, and a rich fire history have made it possible for the world's largest tree to get its biggest in these parks.
