Description
The Grand Canyon, one of America’s oldest National Parks, is an awesome sight. I first encountered this unimaginable landscape 52 years ago; each subsequent visit to the park was met with suprise, something different at which to marvel. It is impossible to photograph the park as a whole, rather, one must look at each new revelation and photograph each new understanding as best as possible with limited tools and technique. This series reveals to a viewer ways in which I saw the park in April, 2017, a current visual understanding of this magnificent place.
Grand Canyon's geology changes around every turn yet it seems to never vary. That is its secret I think. We see the canyon as it is today, a frozen moment in the life of the canyon. We sometimes think that it has always looked like this; nothing could be further from the truth. Formed over millennia, the Grand Canyon tells us its story through layers that have eroded into their present shapes. Layers of color and texture bombard our visual senses with an overkill that makes it seem as if we are looking at the same thing over and over yet at each view the canyon reveals another aspect, a difference in shapes, colors, overlaying of formations and so on. Photographs can only suggest. They cannot tell of the the forces that shaped the canyon. They cannot do anything more than freeze an ever changing landscape into a singular moment in time.

I processed the raw image file shot with a Canon 60D with an 18-55mm IS lens using Photomatix Pro 5, filters from Topaz Labs including Detail 3, BW Effects, ReMask 4 and DeJPEG 4 as well as some minor tweaking in Photoshop including sCurve adjustments, brightness, saturation and the camera raw filter to produce this Black and White HDR image.
