Goldfield Ghost Town just outside Apache Junction Arizona is a tourist attraction that helps remind people of the difficult work of gold mining in the Superstition Mountains. The gear wheel and chain in this image may have been used to extract ore from a mine or operate the hoist bringing miners up from or taking them down into the mine to work. Whatever its purpose, this cast iron wheel is pitted with rust as it returns to the earth from which it was mined. Fitting ending dont you think? This image was photographed on a beautiful February afternoon and converted to black and white using Photomatix Pro and Topaz Labs BW Effects.
