Description
The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in Inyo National Forest is a place of wonder. Four to five thousand year old trees sprinkle the dolomite layer clinging to life in higher altitudes otherwise hostile to vegetation. I photographed this detail of a long dead Ancient Bristlecone Pine, the trunk lying on the ground slowly, ever so slowly, eroding in this harsh environment. The bristlecone pine does not decompose as such, rather it is eroded by wind, rain and changes in temperature. Its rock like, dense construction means this ancient tree will take as long, if not longer, to retrun to the earth as it did to mature into a mature tree, four to five thousand years. The oldest living trees on earth, the ancient bristlecone pine is a rare beauty that may become endangered through global climate change.
