Description
Leaving Kings Canyon National Park and entering Sequoia National Park, just before the Giant Forest, we came across a lookout. Parking the car and looking out over a rather hazy view I turned to return to the car; seeing this scene, the granite cut away to build the Generals Highway, the white fir trees touching the clouds, all I could say was WOW. I exposed several images of this scene. This one stuck.
I truly believe that Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks present the most alluring scenes I have ever seen. These parks, just south of Yosemite, are, by far, the more interesting and photogenic of the two (apologies to Ansel Adams whose images of Yosemite make the park ever so familiar.) The Giant Sequoias, these magnificent old trees, are as awe inspiring as anything I have seen in my many decades on this earth.
Giant sequoias can live for over 3,000 years, outlasting all of their mixed conifer forest neighbors. What is it about giant sequoias that allows them to persist through millennia? Surprisingly, a major factor in in the longevity of giant sequoias is a chemical called tannin. The tannin, present in high concentrations in sequoia bark, gives the sequoia resistance to rot, boring insects, and fire.
The mid-sierra zone (5,000-8,000 ft) creates ideal conditions for giant sequoia growth. Mild winter and summer temperatures, deep winter snowpack, and a rich fire history have made it possible for the world's largest tree to get its biggest in these parks.
